You Will Need:

300g bicarbonate of soda

150g citric acid

50g cornflour

2 tbsp olive or coconut oil

10ml essential oil

A couple of drops of food colouring (optional)

A small amount of water

Optional Decorations:

Dried flower petals or citrus fruit peel.

How to Make Your Own Bath Bombs

1. Using rubber gloves, add the bicarb of soda, citric acid and cornflour into a mixing bowl. Thoroughly whisk together until combined.

2. Melt the oil with the drops of essential oil and food colouring (if you’re using it).  Mix together well until you have your desired colour and/or smell.

3. Add the oil mixture to the dry ingredients a little at a time, whisking constantly. When all of the oil is added, add a few drops of water and whisk again. The mixture will start to fizz at this stage, so working quickly is essential! Add just enough water so that the mixture starts to slightly clump together in your hands.

4. Place dried petals or peel to the bottom of your mould (optional), and start to fill with your mixture, overfilling each side. Press the two halves together tightly until they stick and tap the moulds with the back of a spoon to release the bath bomb. Be careful not to twist the two halves as the mixture won't hold!

5. Leave to set for one hour and, hey presto, they're ready for use.

No Bath Bomb Moulds? No Dramas

We recommend buying some specialist bath bomb moulds such as these, but plastic moulds will also work a treat. However, feel free to use whatever household mould is easiest to hand. Here are some of our suggestions:

  • Silicone ice-cube tray
  • Empty yogurt pots
  • Silicone cupcake cases

When using these containers with your mixture, be sure to compress the powder enough so it is compact. These moulds won’t give the classic, spherical shape, but are more child-friendly and and provide you with the opportunity to make cute, miniature bombs.

Scent Ideas:

Try making different bath bomb mixtures to create a half-and-half fusion. Some lovely combinations of familiar smells you'll recognise from top bath bomb brands include:

Blackcurrant & Beramot, which gives a sunny and fruity fragrance.

Rosewood & Tangerine, for freshness and vibrancy.

Vanilla & Lavender, for a sweet and soothing scent.

Oilbanum & Lime to create a citrus and calming aroma.

Green or herbal tea leaves.

Lemon, orange, or lime peel.

Himalayan rock salt (for added exfoliation).
