1. #wallmural

Usually in the form of a feature wall, wall murals are a popular way to bring more colour, texture and creativity into the home. With 394K hashtags on Instagram, wall murals are becoming more popular as homeowners strive to make a statement with their decor. Hand painting is a common style of mural, as it enables you to get creative by choosing exactly what design you want in your home.

Murals are popular in bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens but can jazz up any room in the house.

2. #maximalist

Minimalism has had its time, and it’s now time to embrace larger things. In the maximalist trend, more is in fact, more. 137K people on Instagram have embraced the maximalist ethos, combining the quirky and the bold, and balancing colours and tones to achieve a result that is powerful, but not cluttered. 2022 is the time to experiment and style your home in a way that brings you joy.

3. #Japandi

This interior trend is where Japanese minimalism meets Scandinavian warmth and functionality. In Japanese design, there should be no signs of clutter and every item must serve a purpose and be pleasing to the eye. 2022 sees the year of modern, minimalist furniture, with a fusion of house plants, bright spaces and neutral colours. Slat doors, zen interiors and balanced, low profile furnishings are fundamental to Japandi design.

Wabi-sabi is a key characteristic of this decor, and its ethos is to accept things as they are - finding beauty in every aspect of the imperfect and being appreciative of simplicity. So that wrinkled linen or coffee stained table may actually be bang on trend!

4. #wallpanelling

Coming up next is the wall panelling trend that’s swept the nation. Wall panelling has been around for a while, but we foresee that 2022 will be the year where people embrace traditional elements of the home and create their own panelling. Check out the video below to see how you can get ahead of the trends and make your own!

5. #balconydecor

During the peak of the pandemic, we found ourselves being grateful for every inch of outside space we had available in our homes, and balconies were definitely one of those places. We predict that searches for balcony designs will peak in 2022 as people continue to work remotely and spend more time in their homes.

We analysed Pinterest trends and found that searches for ‘balcony decor’ peak in June. Plants, rattan furniture and fairy lights are firm favourites for balcony decor, and a great way to personalise the outside space.

6. #globalstyle

Rooted within the style of different cultures and worldly inspiration, global style is a celebration of exotic patterns and decor from destinations such as Asia and Africa. To incorporate this trend into your home decor, embrace warm colours such as browns, oranges and yellows, along with vibrant textiles, large rugs and floor cushions. Authenticity is key here, and balancing colours and textures is vital to ensure your space doesn’t resemble a jumble sale! 128K hashtags embrace global style, so take a look on Instagram to find some great home inspiration.

7. #cannage

2022 is the year for cannage and mesh furniture to really take off, and 37K people have already begun incorporating this trend into their homes. Furniture trends are ever changing, and 2022 sees the return for more traditional decor. Incorporate cannage and rattan furniture into your home with headboards, armchairs and shelves.

Cannage is also inspired by Scandinavian decor and gives off earthy, natural vibes which are super pleasing to the eye.

8. #sustainabledecor

Home interior trends often find resonance in wider, current affairs. Sustainability and the climate have been prominent buzzwords throughout this year, and this is also reflected in many people’s home decor. 82K hashtags for #sustainabledecor reveal that upcycling, second hand purchases and DIY hacks are all the rage in people’s homes, and embrace more mindful home furnishings. It's time to embrace small, local businesses instead of larger corporations and show support to more sustainable practices.

The most popular time of year to start thinking about home renovations is mid January, suggesting that the "new year, new me" ethos is present in our home style as well as our personal selves. More sustainable, cost effective solutions to furnishing homes will be big in 2022, and will help you to kit out your home on a budget.

9. #sculpturalfurniture

Sculptural furniture combines aesthetic elements with practical purposes and includes art and playful design into furniture styles. Examples of this include curved edge furniture, bold lampshades and textured, rustic stools and tables.

The sofas that are all over Instagram at the moment are Togo sofas, which were actually released in the 70’s and have a characteristic soft, curved design, with a foam filling, striking colours and a pleated finish. #togofurniture also has 12K posts on Instagram, and is deemed to be very popular in 2022 with more people opting for ‘low-down’ furniture.

10. #slowdeco

Up and coming for 2022 is #slowdeco, which also finds ground within sustainability and mindfulness, with the aim to bring home decor back to basics and influence people to shop more slowly. This trend sees people rebelling against instant purchases, and really taking the time to choose their furniture, buying products that are made to last and that they can see being in their homes for years to come, instead of making quick purchases for products that will end up being thrown out.

The key to this trend is to let your home grow slowly, placing no rush to kit it out within the first few weeks of moving in, but building on it gradually to create a space where every item has a sense of belonging and is truly thought about before purchasing.
